Air Bags

Q: I was involved in an accident and the right side of my car was hit. Why were the air bags not activated?

A: Cars equipped with air bags have sensors to determine when they should be activated. For newer cars, electronic sensors measure the deceleration of the vehicle and process it mathematically through a computer algorithm. The result is then compared with stored crash tests.

If the measured values indicate that the crash is more severe than the crash tests, the control module will allow an electrical current to flow into the air bag modules to trigger the air bag. On the other hand, if the measured values are not as severe as compared to the crash tests, the air bag will not be activated.

It could also be that your car is not equipped with side air bags. A side collision is unlikely to activate front air bags.
